Cannabis Entrepreneurs with an interest in Macedonia have reason to celebrate. Pharma Cann Polska’s Macedonian facility recently received EU-GMP certification. The company is the first Macedonian cannabis cultivator to receive this certification.
The process for EU-GMP certification began in 2019. In December inspectors visited the Macedonian facility. By March 2020 authorities issued EU-GMP certificates for cannabis extracts.
Macedonian law does not permit the exportation of cannabis flower. But it does allow the exportation of extracts.
Soon the Macedonian facility will export cannabis extracts. It will be the very first export of a Macedonia cannabis product. And Germany and Poland will be the first recipients of Macedonia’s cannabis oil.
Shortages in Medical Marijuana
During the summer months several EU countries, Germany included, faced cannabis shortages. The shortages were due to several factors. The three main factors are
1) The rising number of medical marijuana patients.
2) The refusal of the Netherlands to export cannabis in the quantity previously agreed upon.
3) The recall of cannabis tincture THC10:CBD10 a product relied upon by medical marijuana patients in Germany.
Now, Germany and Poland seek to assure access for thousands of medical marijuana patients within their borders.
Macedonia’s Can Be A Cannabis Powerhouse
Macedonia can be the EU’s largest exporter of medical cannabis extracts. In 2016, the country’s officials recognized the EU’s growing medical marijuana need. They set a goal to become the EU’s cannabis powerhouse.
Now, with the first EU-GMP certification, they’re beginning to see their goal take form.
EU-GMP Quality Oil at Lower Costs
Macedonian cannabis cultivators produce high quality cannabis extracts at low costs. The price of Macedonian cannabis is on par with Columbia. Pharmacists in Germany will appreciate the money they save with Macedonian cannabis.
In Germany insurance reimburses at a fixed rate. Patients in Germany’s regulated program don’t pay for their marijuana. It’s the pharmacies who bear the burden of getting the best prices from the distributors.
The pharmacists’ profit is the fixed reimbursement minus the cost of the oil.
Macedonian Cannabis Oil Is Competitive
Pharm Canna’s Macedonian subsidiaries, known as NYSK. The facility produces cannabis oil. The oil is produced at a much lower cost than oils produced in Canada. Canada is Germany’s primary source for tinctures and extracts.
Zlatko Keskovski is the CEO of NYSK. He recognized the difference in costs.
“When I hear about the prices of medicinal cannabis extracts in Germany and other European countries, I cannot believe how expensive they are. We expect our production costs to be very competitive in the EU markets,”– Keskovski.
Competition is great news. In the future patients will have more choices and greater accessibility. More medical marijuana treatments at lowered costs strengthens the EU’s industry.
The country’s laws do not yet allow the exportation of dried cannabis flowers. In the future these laws are likely to change.
Why it matters
For a long time EU states with medical marijuana programs needed a new source. Reliance on a few sources was too risky for a growing industry.
Thousands of people receive medical marijuana treatment in Germany and Poland. To rely on just two sources isn’t enough to guarantee continued treatment for all these patients.
Macedonian cannabis is a means to fulfill the needs of the EU’s medical marijuana patients. In due time Macedonia will be a powerhouse for EU-GMP grade medical cannabis.
